Track the process, not the outcomes

master ladderI read an interesting post by John Maeda where he questions what exactly we should be practising for the 10,000 hours that Malcolm Gladwell suggests is required to master a skill. He points out that although we can understand that it takes this extended time to master a skill, often we are not sure exactly what it is that we should be practising for this time.

Without rewriting the article, John is provided a bit of insight from the sports world where a coach will focus on 2 measurements: the actions that lead to a goal for the team (a ‘for’ action) and the actions that would lead to a goal for the other team (an ‘against’ action). measuring these actions rather than the goals themselves is a great idea – better processes result in better outcomes.

I’m definitely going to look for ways to implement this way of thinking and measuring.
