I read an interesting post by John Maeda where he questions what exactly we should be practising for the 10,000 hours that Malcolm Gladwell suggests is required to master a skill. He points out that although we can understand that it takes this extended time to master a skill, often we are not sure exactly what it is that we should be practising for this time.
Without rewriting the article, John is provided a bit of insight from the sports world where a coach will focus on 2 measurements: the actions that lead to a goal for the team (a ‘for’ action) and the actions that would lead to a goal for the other team (an ‘against’ action). measuring these actions rather than the goals themselves is a great idea – better processes result in better outcomes.
I’m definitely going to look for ways to implement this way of thinking and measuring.
