Symbolism

I made the decision, I made my mark. There’s no going back now. It took me long enough though – I had the design in 2002 already, but I hadn’t quite committed to it back then. Now I have. Even if I haven’t, I don’t have that option anymore. It’s fixed and permanent. Luckily it’s something I believe in, something I can see myself living and striving towards.

You’re probably wondering what it means. Here’s a brief explanation.

Firstly, the circle refers to the cycle or birth, death and rebirth, a continuous process of ever-increasing self-awarenesss. The visible sections of the circle refer to the times when the soul is visible in this physical plane, the invisible parts when the soul is not.

Secondly, it is broken into 4 segments to symbolise the 4 classical (Greek, Buddhist, Hindu and ancient Tibetan) physical elements – fire, earth, water and air. Most importantly though is that the centre point of this circle is the 5th non-physical element, the quintessence, the space or the void between the other elements. This points to me. It symbolises to me that although the ever-changing physical world surrounds us with it’s great diversity & adversity, trial & tribulations, joys & sorrows, looking inwards is where the truth lies.

Pity I have to look in a mirror to see it and be reminded of it’s meaning!

A slight niggle is that everyone says I’ll be having my next one before long. We’ll see about that…
